Rahma Assistive Devices

Empowering Mobility, Honoring Memory

Founder's Journey

My name is Aza Mohamed Abdi, and I'm the founder of R.A.D, which stands for Rahma Assistive Devices. Our mission is to create accessible and affordable mobility devices tailored to the unique challenges faced by Kenyans.

In July 2021, my beloved grandmother Rahma moved in with our family. At 89 years old, her limited mobility became a daily challenge for us as primary caregivers. Despite our best efforts, helping her stand and sit unassisted caused physical strain and discomfort for everyone involved. The tragic incident of losing hold of her during a transfer, leading to a fall and a broken foot, underscored the urgent need for a reliable mobility solution. This heartbreaking experience inspired me to create R.A.D in her loving memory, dedicated to providing comfort and mobility to those in need.

Problem Statement

Mobility is essential for health and independence, especially for the elderly and those with lower limb disorders. Yet, many struggle with Sit To Stand (STS) motions, a challenge exacerbated by conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and neuromuscular diseases. Aging further weakens muscles, leading to reduced mobility and independence.

Caregivers also bear a heavy burden, often suffering from back injuries due to the physical strain of lifting patients. These injuries not only affect their health but also lead to significant financial strain.

The FreeWheel Mobility Chair

At R.A.D, we developed the "FreeWheel" mobility chair to enhance user mobility and ensure caregiver safety. Key features include

  • Powered Lifting and Transfer Mechanism

    Safe and effortless mobility assistance.

  • Ergonomic Design:

Enhanced user comfort during sit-to-stand activities.

  • Customizable Settings

    Tailored to individual patient needs.

  • Intuitive Control Interface

Easy operation for both users and caregivers.

The global wheelchair market is growing rapidly, driven by an aging population and increasing spinal cord injuries. In Kenya, where mobility is the most common disability affecting 0.4 million people, the need for advanced mobility solutions like the FreeWheel chair is more crucial than ever.
